Shiva Dances

2009, 25 x 37″ (64 x 94 cm)

This tapestry is based on Hubble telescope images of a distant nebula. Nebulae arise from black holes, the sites of the creation and the destruction of stars.  Shiva is a Hindu God often depicted dancing; she is both goddess of creation and destruction as the two are inextricably intertwined and are constantly evolving one from the other (yin and yang). These days all we seem to read about is destruction – we need to find creative ways to turn this into an opportunity of new creation, a more harmonious way of life.
